Get the autism diagnosis in writing
You need a formal written diagnosis from a qualified professional. In Bergen County, the diagnosis is the starting point for every funding path. Without it, no provider can offer an assessment. Your pediatrician, a developmental pediatrician, or a psychologist can provide this. Keep a copy because you will need it for the next step.
Identify your funding door
Your funding source depends on your child’s age and insurance. If your child is under 3, the door is New Jersey Early Intervention. If your child is 3 or older and on NJ FamilyCare, the door is PerformCare. If you have a commercial insurance plan, you work directly with your insurance card. Bergen County’s 59 separate school districts do not control this step, but knowing your door is essential before anything else.

When you contact the funding door or your insurance, request a BCBA assessment, not therapy. An assessment is the evaluation that determines if ABA is medically necessary and what hours are needed. NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid and CHIP)
If your child is under 21 and you qualify financially, NJ FamilyCare covers ABA. For children age 3 and older, PerformCare coordinates behavioral health services. Managed care plans in Bergen County include Horizon NJ Health, Wellpoint, Aetna Better Health, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Because each of the county’s 59 school districts handles special education separately, your child’s eligibility and referral process can differ from a neighbor’s. Commercial Health Insurance
New Jersey’s autism insurance mandate requires state-regulated plans to cover ABA. However, if your employer is self-funded (ERISA), the plan sets its own rules.
